Save the Terminal, Inc.
Hide Profile
Cincinnati's Union Terminal was completed in 1933 and was a major hub of railroad traffic before the dominance of the automobile. By the 1970s there was little traffic going through the terminal. In July of 1972 the Southern Railroad announced plans to tear down the concourse portion of the Cincinnati Union Terminal in order to expand the facilities for its "piggy-back" freight trains. In October Mayor Thomas Luken appointed a task force to work out other uses for the terminal. Save the Terminal, Inc. was created with Alfred A. Moore as president. A plan to move the murals by Winold Reiss was undertaken and as a result the fourteen murals depicting Cincinnati industries were transferred to the Greater Cincinnati Airport and installed in their new terminal in 1974. This move was accomplished with the support of various Cincinnati businesses and industries and with individual contributions.
