Alsop family.

Hide Profile

John Alsop was probably born in New York in 1724. He and his brother Richard were merchants (John & Richard Alsop) in New York, but terminated their business in 1757. John Alsop continued the operation in New York, becoming a leading importer. A delegate to the First Continental Congress, he retired to Middletown in 1783, when the British occupied New York. He died in Newtown, New York, on November 22, 1794.

Joseph Wright Alsop (1838-1891) was born in New York City on August 20, 1838. He practiced law in New York City and participated in municipal affairs. Alsop served in the Connecticut State Senate (1881-1887) and on the state board of agriculture (1881-1891). In 1890 he received the nomination for lieutenant-governor. Alsop died on June 24, 1891 in Fenwick, Connecticut.

Joseph Wright Alsop (1876-1953), known as "the Squire of Avon," was a "gentleman farmer," raising cattle and tobacco on his farm, Wood Ford, in Avon, Connecticut. Mr. Alsop served as the first selectman from Avon for many years and as state representative from the town and a state senator. His wife, Corinne Robinson Alsop (1886-1971), formed the first Connecticut group of Republican women to receive recognition in the party before they had won the right to vote. In 1924, she was elected to a two-year term in the Connecticut State House of Representatives. Their youngest son, John Alsop (1915-2000), was an insurance executive in Hartford and the Republican candidate in the 1962 Connecticut gubernatorial race. He was defeated.

Richard Alsop was born in Middletown, Connecticut, on January 23, 1761. He studied at Yale College and became a notable literary figure. Alsop formed the "Hartford Wits," a literary group with members including Theodore Dwight, Lemuel Hopkins, and Benjamin Trumbull. He was principla writer for the "Echo," a series of satirical essays on political and social topics published as a volume in 1807. Alsop died in Flatbush, Long Island on August 20, 1815.
