Alsop family.
John Alsop was probably born in New York in 1724. He and his brother Richard were merchants (John & Richard Alsop) in New York, but terminated their business in 1757. John Alsop continued the operation in New York, becoming a leading importer. A delegate to the First Continental Congress, he retired to Middletown in 1783, when the British occupied New York. He died in Newtown, New York, on November 22, 1794.
Joseph Wright Alsop (1838-1891) was born in New York City on August 20, 1838. He practiced law in New York City and participated in municipal affairs. Alsop served in the Connecticut State Senate (1881-1887) and on the state board of agriculture (1881-1891). In 1890 he received the nomination for lieutenant-governor. Alsop died on June 24, 1891 in Fenwick, Connecticut.
