Robert Pitcairn was born in Scotland in 1836 and came to America with his parents at the age of ten. He was forced to work at an early age and became friends with Andrew Carnegie while working as a telegraph messenger. He advanced to telegraph operator before joining the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in 1853. He rose in rank and became head of the Transportation Division, based in Altoona, Pa. Eventually he became the Superintendent of the Pittsburgh Division. Pitcairn also acted as director of numerous banks in the Pittsburgh area and became vice president of Westinghouse.
