The Association of the Freight Traffic Officers of the Pennsylvania System was formed at a meeting of the principal officers of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's Freight Traffic Department (both Lines East and Lines West) held in Pittsburgh on January 18, 1900. The Association was an independent organization with its own constitution patterned after the existing Association of Transportation Officers in the Operating Dept. The Association was to serve as a forum for bringing the freight traffic officers together twice a year to exchange views and share information, with the particular aim of improving and standardizing departmental practices. The Association had standing committees on rates, weights, tariffs and classifications; on claims and tracings; on blanks and forms; on soliciting; on movement of traffic; and so on, each of which would keep the general membership informed of developments within its particular sphere. In addition to the committee reports, the meetings would feature special papers on some aspect of departmental operations or history. The Association was apparently allowed to lapse some time after 1910.
