Historian of the American West. Born 1906 in Daingerfield, Texas. Received B.A. from East Texas State, M.A. from Texas Technological College and Ph. D. from University of Texas at Austin. Performed doctoral work under Walter Prescott Webb. Began teaching at Texas Technological College in 1936. Became Horn Professor of History in 1967. President of Texas State Historical Association in 1967. Married Ellen Kegens in 1926. Died in Lubbock in 1985.
