Davis served as the presiding judge of the 8th Judicial Circuit of Illinois from 1848-1862. He was an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1862-1877, and U.S. Senator from Illinois from 1877-1883. Sarah G. Beck was the daughter of Robert Cooper Grier, a justice of the Supreme Court.
