Organized in South Bend, Indiana in 1862, the 87th Indiana Regiment was mustered in on 31 August. The 87th saw action in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas. While in the Carolinas the Pioneer Brigade became legendary for its construction of roads and bridges. The regiment moved up to Richmond, Virginia and on to Washington City where it participated in General Sherman's grand review. The 87th was mustered out on 21 June 1865.
