Newberry Library. Cataloguing Section.

Hide Profile

Cataloguing and classification have been reorganized numerous times since the Library's founding in 1892.

Until 1919, they were separate departments, and from 1915 to 1919, after the reintroduction of the card catalogue, cataloguing was further divided into a Recataloguing Division and an Author Cataloguing Division. From 1919 to 1937, cataloguing and classification remained distinct functions performed by different individuals in a merged department. By 1938, cataloguing and classification had merged entirely and cataloguers performed both tasks.
