Herbert, Hilary A. (Hilary Abner), 1834-1919

Hilary Abner Herbert (March 12, 1834 - March 6, 1919) was Secretary of the Navy under President Grover Cleveland, 1893-1897. He also served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Alabama.

Hilary Herbert began practicing law in Greenville, Ala. in 1857. He served in the Confederate States Army in Pensacola, Fla. and in Va. as a member of the Eight Alabama Infantry Regiment, eventually reaching the rank of colonel. He returned to the practice of law after the War, moving to Montgomery, Ala. in 1872. From 1877 to 1893 he represented Alabama in the U. S. Congress. He distinguished himself on the Committee of Naval Affairs and served as Secretary of the Navy during President Grover Cleveland's second term. After retiring from public service Herbert practiced law in Washington, D. C.
