Southern Baptist minister, missionary, editor and denominational leader. Howell served as pastor of the First Baptist Church, Nashville, Tennessee and the Second Baptist Church in Richmond. He was involved in a bitter dispute with J.R. Graves, leader of the landmark movement in Tennessee. Howell edited the "Tennessee Baptist" from 1835 to 1846.
