William L. "Bill" Shelton, Jr., was a United States (U.S.) Army officer during WWII. He was born in Northfork, West Virginia. He graduated from Northfork High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute at Blacksburg, Virginia. In 1933 and 1934, Shelton served as a junior officer and later commander of a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp in Zanesville, Ohio. He was an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve from May 1938 until February 1941. Shelton went on active duty at Fort Knox, Kentucky (February 15, 1941), and served as personnel adjutant of the 16th Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Division. He held various supply positions with the 1st Armored in the U.S. and Europe before transferring to the 9th Armored Division (January 6, 1943). Shelton was a major, lieutenant colonel, and was the division's quartermaster (QM) officer. During the Battle of the Bulge, Shelton was injured in action. He was married to Bonita B. Shelton, who lived in Zanesville.
