Jean Isobel Young was born in 1903, daughter of James Thomas Young and Marian Glen Scott. She was educated at Tunbridge Wells County School and High School, Sydenham High School. She then studied English at Girton College 1921-1924. She was the Amelia Gurney Scholar 1924 and received the University Graduate Studentship 1925-1927, gaining her Ph.D in 1929. She was Senior English Mistress at Tonbridge County School for Girls 1929-1932, did translation work for the British Legation, Copenhagen 1932, and became Lecturer in English at the University of Reading from 1933 and tutor in Norwegian at the College of the Sea 1942-1944. Her publications include translations from Danish and Icelandic. Jean Young died in 1990.
