Hide Profile

Alice Margaret Strang Woods was born in Irville, Ohio, on April 16, 1883. Her father, Robert Edwin Strang (1846-1909) was born in Erie County, New York, and her mother, Harriet Beverly Lemert (1849-1911) was a native of Ohio. Both also lived in Marshalltown, Iowa. As a child Alice traveled with her parents and older brother, Carl, to California, where the family briefly settled in Santa Paula before moving to Los Angeles in 1895. Alice graduated from Los Angeles High School and attended the University of California, Berkeley, beginning in 1903. She was actively involved in a variety of Christian organizations in the Los Angeles area, most notably the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor, the American Home Missionary Society, and the Young Women's Christian Association of Los Angeles, for which she served as membership secretary for three years. In 1910 she married Walter Allen Woods (1882-1968), who had recently moved to Los Angeles from Pittsburgh and worked as a mechanical engineer for the Pacific Electric railroad. Alice died in Los Angeles in 1972.
