John S. Van E. Kohn (1906-1976) was born in New York City and graduated from Williams College in 1928. He went on to study at Harvard University, from which he received an M.A. in 1930. Kohn was an antiquarian book dealer at the Argosy Book Store (1931-1935), the Collectors' Bookshop (1935-1943), and the Seven Gables Bookshop (1946-1976).
