Variant namesJoseph M. Howorth practiced law in Greenville, Mississippi with his wife. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Lucy Somerville Howorth to the Board of Veterans Appeals, and her husband accompanied her to Washington, DC. In 1954, the couple returned to Mississippi and established a law practice together in Cleveland. Joseph M. Howorth died in 1980.
James Oliver Eastland was born on 28 November 1904 in Doddsville, Mississippi. He attended the University of Mississippi (1922-1924), Vanderbilt University (1925-1926), and the University of Alabama (1926-1927). After admission to the state bar in 1927, he practiced law in Forest, Mississippi and served for a time in the Mississippi House of Representatives. In 1941, U.S. Senator Pat Harrison of Mississippi died in office, and Governor Paul B. Johnson Sr. offered the temporary appointment to Eastland. Eastland successfully campaigned for the senate seat in 1942, remaining in Congress until his retirement in 1978.
