Society for the Promotion of Collegiate and Theological Education
Society for the Promotion of Collegiate and Theological Education at the West founded in New York State in 1843; in 1871 words "at the West" were dropped from the name; in 1874 merged with American Education Society (formed 1815) to form American College and Education Society; in 1894 this absorbed the New West Education Commission and changed its name to Congregational Education Society; Congregational organization headquartered in Boston, Mass.
