The Thetis, originally a Dundee whaler, was built in 1881 with a displacement of 1,250 tons. The ship was owned by the A. Stephen & Sons company when it made the voyage described in this logbook. It was later, sold to the United States Navy for duty related to the Greely relief expedition. In 1900 the Navy transferred the Thetis to the Revenue-Cutter Service for duty in Arctic waters. The Thetis was later stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii.
