George H. Hitchcock was an officer of the 132nd Regiment of Infantry, New York State Volunteers. While stationed in North Carolina, he resided at Camp Claassen near New Bern. In 1865, Hitchcock was commissioned in the United States Volunteers as brigadier general. By 1870, Hitchcock was the chief clerk for the Richmond County Police in Edgewater, Staten Island, N.Y. Hitchcock also served as secretary of the Staten Island Shore Railroad Company.

George H. S. Driver was a Union soldier from Danvers, Mass., serving as a commissary sergeant aboard the schooner Highlander from December 1861 to March 1862. His Civil War naval activities began in Annapolis, Md., at Camp J. A. Andrew, and continued aboard the schooner Highlander the Pamlico Sound. After March 1862, Driver was on detached duty in Massachusetts due to illness.
