The Thetis ship began its career as the U.S.S. Thetis, was part of the Greeley Relief Expedition in 1885 and then decommissioned. It was reactivated in 1887 and assigned surveying duties heading as far north as Alaska, then decommissioned again in 1898. Eventually, Thetis fell under control of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and was sent to Alaska where she primarily served with the Bering Sea Patrol, headquartered in Unalaska, Alaska. In 1906, Thetis replaced the U.S.R.C. Bear on the Arctic Cruise. [From: D.L. Noble and T.R. Strobridge, "The Arctic Adventures of the Thetis," (Arctic, 30:1, p. 3-12, 1977).]
