Emma Battell Stewart was the daughter of Emma Hart Seymour and Philip Battell. She grew up in Middlebury, Vt., and married John W. Stewart (Vermont governor and U.S. Representative and Senator) in 1860. She was an invalid in her late years. While her husband was in Washington, in the 1880s, she wintered in New York or Boston. She died in 1900. Part of her estate was a bequest to the Congregational Church of Middlebury for a chapel which was never built. In 1927 her heirs finally reached an agreement with the church settling the estate.
