Reginald Heber was an English author and clergyman. He wrote numerous hymns, published a volume of poetry, and worked on a Dictionary of the Bible. After years as Rector of Hrodnet, he reluctantly agreed to become Bishop of Calcutta, and remained in the East until his untimely death a few years later.

Anglican Bishop, poet, and hymn writer Reginald Heber was born at Malpas, Cheshire, England, on April 21, 1783. He was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford and All Souls College, Oxford. In 1803, his best known poem, "Palestine," won the Oxford prize for best English verse. He was ordained as an Anglican clergyman in 1807, and married Amelia Shipley in 1809. In 1815, Heber was appointed Brampton lecturer at Oxford. In 1823, he was appointed Bishop of Calcutta. Prior to his departure for India, Heber was awarded the D.D. from Oxford. Bishop Reginald Heber died while visiting Trichinopoly, India, on April 26, 1826. Among his best known hymns are: "From Greenlands Icy Mountains," "Holy, Holy, Holy," "Lord of Mercy and of Might," and "The Son of God Goes Forth to War."
