The first extension activity in Iowa occurred in 1903 in Sioux County when farmers, acting on a challenge from Iowa State College agronomist, Perry G. Holden, created a plot where agricultural experiments could be conducted. In 1906 the Iowa General Assembly appropriated funds to create a Department of Extension at Iowa State College.

University Extension was established on 1 March 1966, by the merger of the short courses service group, farm demonstrations service group, engineering extension service group, and the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS). University Extension activities extend useful, practical, problem-solving information to the people of Iowa. Faculty and extension staff work together to provide consultations, meetings, newsletters, publications, and other media, to help extension program participants.
