Stanley R. Johnson received a B.A. (1961) in Agricultural Economics from Western Illinois; an M.S. (1962) in Agricultural Economics from Texas Technological College; and a Ph. D (1966) from Texas A & M. He held a number of academic positions (1964-1985) in Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri and University of Connecticut. In 1985, he was named a Professor of Economics at Iowa State University as well as Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor (1990).

Johnson was also the Director (1985-1996) of ISU's Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD). In 1996, he was named Vice-Provost of University Extension.
