James Turner Morehead was the first native-born Kentuckian to become governor (1834-1836). Born in Bullitt County, on May 24, 1797, he was educated at Transylvania University. He read law with Judge H.P. Broadnaz and John J. Crittenden. A National Republican, he was elected lieutenant governor in 1832, although Democrat John Breathitt won the race for governor. He was sworn in as the eleventh governor a day after the death of Breathitt in 1834. He was denied his party's nomination for governor in 1836. He went on to serve in the state legislature and as a U.S. Senator. He died in 1854.
