Minnesota Sanatorium for Consumptives

The Moccasin started in March 1938 and was in continuous monthly publication through April 1948, although the first issue was actually entitled Ching Sing. From May 1948 to March 1952 publication ceased. It began again in April 1952 and ended with the June 1957 issue.

In 1930, an epidemiologist was added to the sanatorium staff to direct the field work in the 46 counties that did not tax themselves to support county sanatoria. His duties were to investigate and examine all reported cases; offer Mantoux tests to the general public, especially school children and teachers; and attempt to investigate the origination of positive tests, especially in the children. Part of this program also seems to have been the distribution, upon request, of tuberculin to doctors and clinics for Mantoux testings.

In 1935, the State Board of Control authorized the sanatorium to employ a physician to act as state epidemiologist, covering the same 46 counties. His duties were to contact medical societies and help them organize their tuberculosis load so that the doctors would have more control over their cases and to cooperate in every way with the doctors, arranging for care as well as the examination of exposed contacts. It specifically stated that he did not do surveys or investigate tuberculosis in families except with the doctor or at his request. By late 1937, the tuberculin distribution and the epidemiologist position had both been transferred to the State Board of Health.
