John Hunter came from London. In January 1790 he and his brother embarked on the 'Nassau' bound for Smyrna, the beginning of a two-year stay in Turkey. After Smyrna John Hunter and his party travelled to Constantinople [Istanbul] which they left in May 1792. They travelled overland to Paris by way of Moldavia, Wallachia, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Geneva, and Paris, returning to London in December 1792.

John Hunter (1746-1837) was the first lay Principal of United College, St Andrews. He had studied at Edinburgh University, acted as clerk to Lord Monboddo, and was then appointed in 1775 as professor of humanity at St Andrews University. He remained in this post until 1835, only retiring to become Principal.

John Hunter (1746-1837) was the first lay Principal of United College, St Andrews. He had studied at Edinburgh University, acted as clerk to Lord Monboddo, and was then appointed in 1775 as professor of humanity at St Andrews University. He remained in this post until 1835, only retiring to become Principal.

Hugh Cleghorn (1752-1836) was the son of John Cleghorn, a brewer in Edinburgh. He studied at Edinburgh University, gaining his MA in 1772, then was appointed professor of civil history at St Andrews University from 1773 to 1793. He acted as chief secretary to the government in Ceylon from 1798 to 1800. He acquired the estate of Strathivie in Fife in 1806.
