Hunter was part of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, and a member of Elbert Hubbard's Roycrofters in East Aurora, NY, in 1904. He devoted his life to research, collecting, writing, and publishing the history of hand papermaking and printing. He published books at his Mountain House Press and established Lime Rock Mill, a paper mill in Connecticut. In 1939 he established the Dard Hunter Paper Museum at MIT, which later moved to the American Museum of Papermaking in Atlanta, Ga.

Hunter was born in Ohio to a family involved in printing and publishing. As a graphic artist Hunter is identified with the American Arts and Crafts movement. He studied in East Aurora, New York, with Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters. Hunter is also known as a papermaker and an authority on the history of papermaking. Through his Mountain House Press he published his scholarly works on papermaking and at his Lime Rock Mill in Connecticut made papers for the books he published. Hunter was an avid collector of papers and his collection formed the basis of the Dard Hunter Paper Museum. It was located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1939-1954), but now comprises most of the collection of the Robert C. Williams American Museum of Papermaking located within the Institute of Paper Science and Technology in Atlanta, Georgia.

Author and authority on paper, papermaking, and printing. Dard Hunter was born in Steubenville, Ohio and resided in Chillicothe, Ohio and elsewhere. Hunter studied and worked in both the United States and Europe. As a result of his visits to paper mills and papermakers in various countries Hunter produced by hand limited edition books containing original paper specimens from his travel. He also wrote several books of general interest and many articles about paper and related subjects. He was curator of the Dard Hunter Paper Museum.
