Hide Profile

Howell (1906-1994) was an artist seeking better paper for his wood engravings in the 1930s when he began to create papers in New York City. Later he moved operations to Long Island. His papers were made from linen or home-grown flax. It was the texture, color and weight that set his papers apart from other handmade papers. Howell also lectured and wrote on the history of paper and its uses in print and bookmaking, and his papers were used by artists for their printing, collage, drawing and watercolors.
