The Midwest Railroad Historical Foundation was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1945 as the Midwest Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. In December 1955, the Midwest Chapter was incorporated as the Midwest Railroad Historical Foundation. The group's membership was drawn chiefly from northeast Ohio. Aside from an annual meeting, the Midwest Railroad Historical Foundation sponsored trips to such places as New York, Washington, D. C., Chardon, and Painesville. One of the trips was a mystery trip, where the passengers were not told of the train's destination. These trips were on passenger coaches which the foundation had purchased and restored to working order. The foundation later bought a steam locomotive to pull the cars. During the 1970s, the foundation's train was operated by the Cuyahoga Valley Line, which sponsored excursions to Hale Farm and Akron.
