New Mexico. Governor (1939-1942 : Miles)

Miles, a Democrat, was elected Governor in 1938 and was re- elected in 1940. He was born in Tennessee in 1885 and moved to New Mexico in 1906. Miles served as a public official in various positions before and after his tenure as Governor, including a term as one of New Mexico's U.S. Representatives from 1949 to 1950.

John E. Miles was born at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, July 28, 1884. He settled in Texas and began farming at the age of seventeen, then moved to Oklahoma and finally to New Mexico in 1906. He took a homestead there and married Susie C. Wade in 1906. Miles served in several offices including Quay County Assessor (1920-1924), secretary of the New Mexico State Tax Commission (1925), and secretary of the Democratic State Central Committee. He was elected Governor in 1938 and was re-elected in 1940. Upon completion of his term as Governor he held various positions including chairman of the Public Service Commission (1943-1948), Commissioner of Public Lands (1947-1948), and U.S. Representative to Congress (1949-1950). Miles died on October 7, 1971.
