Joseph Black, Scottish chemist and physician. Best known for his experiments and discoveries with regard to heat and the properties of gasses, Black was a partner and longtime friend of James Watt.

Black received his M.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 1754, taught at the University of Glasgow, then returned to Edinburgh in 1766, to take the chair of chemistry.
