The Louisiana State Lottery Company was incorporated in 1868 by the Louisiana General Assembly. The commissioners, Generals P.G.T. Beauregard and Jubal Anderson Early, supervised the drawings and lent some legitimacy to the lottery. Despite facing strong opposition on moral grounds and charges of corruption, the Louisiana State Lottery Company held the monopoly on legal gambling in Louisiana until 1893, when it relocated its headquarters to Honduras. With printing presses stateside, the company continued to sell tickets illegally in the United States until 1907, when the Department of Justice closed it down permanently.
