The land on which Traveler's Rest, a Stephens Co., GA, inn, also known as Jarrett's Manor, now stands was granted to Major Jesse Walton in 1785. In 1818 his daughter sold the site to James R. Wyly. After Devereaux Jarrett's purchase in 1833, Traveler's Rest remained in the family until Mary Elizabeth Jarrett White sold the manor to the Georgia Historical Commission. Charles Kennedy Jarrett (1820-1877) was the youngest son of Devereaux Jarrett (1785-1852). Charles married Elizabeth Lucas (d. 1904) of Athens, GA, and a number of letters were written from that city; their children were Charles P., Sally G., Mary Elizabeth, and George D. Jarrett. George attended West Point and served in Cuba and the Philippines. Like his father, Charles K. was involved in gold mining and operated a smithy, a bridge, a store, and several mills.
