Dynamite Johnny O'Brien was born in Cork, Ireland. In 1866 he ran away to sea, eventually landing in N.Y. where he earned his Ship Master's Certificate. He married Emily Showers in 1878 and spent most of his life captaining ships in Alaskan waters. He wrote the three journals between 1928 and 1930.

John Augustine O'Brien was born in the city of Cork, Ireland on January 29, 1851. Rather than be sent away to boarding school in London, O'Brien ran away to sea in 1866. He received his Master's Certificate from the American Shipmaster's Association in New York. Traveling west to Portland, Oregon, he married Emily Showers in 1878.
