O'Brien, John Augustine, 1851-1931.

John Augustine O'Brien was born in the city of Cork, Ireland on January 29, 1851. Rather than be sent away to boarding school in London, O'Brien ran away to sea in 1866. He received his Master's Certificate from the American Shipmaster's Association in New York. Traveling west to Portland, Oregon, he married Emily Showers in 1878. Except for a brief period spent prospecting for gold in Alaska, he spent the rest of his life as a ship's captain or pilot.
