Anna Andreevna Akhmatova, Russian poet of the Acmeist movement. Poema bez geroia, begun during the Second World War in Tashkent and written over several decades, is set at a masked ball in Saint Petersburg on the eve of the First World War and describes Russian society and Akhmatova's personal tumult during this period.
