Egbert Benson (June 21, 1746-Aug. 24, 1833) was the first attorney general of New York State, a representative from New York in the first two Congresses under the Constitution, appointed a justice of the supreme court of New York in 1794, and in 1801 he was appointed as chief judge of the second United States circuit court. He was also one of the founders of the New-York Historical Society in 1804, and was its first president from 1805 to 1815.
