Jones, Noble Wimberly, c. 1723-1805
Biographical notes:
Noble Wimberly Jones (1723-1805), the son of Noble Jones, was born in Lambeth, England. He came to Georgia with his parents in 1733, in the first group of Georgia settlers. He studied medicine and practiced for several years. He was a member of the Colonial Assembly, 1755-1772, serving part of the time as Speaker. At the outbreak of the American Revolution he took a strong stand on the side of the Americans and was called the "Morning Star of Liberty." He was a member of the Council of Safety and the Provincial Congress, 1775, a delegate to the Continental Congress, 1775-1776, 1781-1782, a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, 1783, president of the Constitutional Convention of 1785.
