Lawyer and Revolutionary soldier and statesman; born in Trenton, New Jersey, Reed relocated to Philadelphia in 1770, where he served as stateman in various capacities, including president of the 2nd Provincial Congress. Reed also served in the American Army as military secretary to General Washington and adjutant-general. Elected to Continental Congress in 1777 and held the office of president of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, 1778-1781. Married Esther De Berdt.
