William Rufus King was born in Sampson County, NC, on April 7, 1786. He represented North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1811 to 1816. For the next couple of years, he served as secretary of the U.S. legation in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1818 he moved to Dallas County in the new Alabama territory where he was elected a delegate to the convention that framed Alabama's first constitution. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1819 to 1844, when he resigned to become minister to France. In 1848 he was appointed by Alabama Governor Chapman to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Arthur P. Bagby. In 1852 he was elected as vice president on the ticket with Franklin Pierce. Ill with tuberculosis, he was in Havana, Cuba on inauguration day. By a special act of Congress, he was allowed to take the oath of office in Havana on March 4, 1853. He returned to his home in Cahaba, Ala., where he died on April 18, 1853.
