Richard J. Gatling was the inventor of the Gatling gun.

A native of North Carolina, Gatling moved to Indianapolis in 1854. In 1862 he invented and patented his first Gatling Gun, and with Oliver P. Morton's help obtained a government contract. Gatling moved to Hartford, Conn. in the mid-1860s, and his company was sold to Colt 10 years later.
