A native of Virginia, Love began his military career by attending West Point. He served in the Army until 1852, when he moved to Indianapolis and married Mary F. Smith. Love became involved in railroad finance with his father-in-law, Oliver H. Smith, and later with Richard J. Gatling marketing Gatling guns. In 1880 he was appointed manager of the National Soldiers Home.
