Biographical notes:

Thomas Catling (Sept. 23, 1838- Dec. 25, 1920) was a British journalist and editor of Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper. He was born in Cambridge and started to work for newspapers (Cambridge Chronicle) at the age of 12 to help support his family. He moved to London at age 16 and soon after began working at Lloyd's. In 1885 Catling took over the editorship. He was a supporter of William Gladstone and the Liberal Party but as the Liberal party divided itself, Lloyd's started supporting another Liberal Party member David Lloyd George. Gladstone's promotion of home rule for Ireland created difficulties for Catling, but he chose readers over politics; Catling retired in 1906.
