Beattie counted many famous and influential people among his closest friends, including: Thomas Campbell, for whom he wrote a biography; Samuel Rogers, for whom he was executor; Lady Blessington, to whose Book of Beauty annual he often contributed; and Lady Byron, who reportedly "had imparted to him the true reason of her separation from her husband, and that it was not the one given by Mrs. Stowe.".
