Biographical notes:

William Fife Knowland was the son of Joseph R. Knowland, publisher of the Oakland [Calif.] Tribune. William succeeded Joseph as publisher and editor of the Tribune, and he took an active interest in U.S. and local politics. He served as a U.S. Senator from California from 1945 to 1958, and championed conservative and anti-communist policies. He ran unsuccessfully for the California governorship in 1958.
