Armstrong 1860 Married Ellen Elizabeth Lewis 1874 Became trustee of the newly founded Hampton Institute, Hampton, Va. 1879 Resigned from Devlin & Co.; took charge of John Wanamaker firm's “Oak Hall” clothing store in Philadelphia, Pa. 1885 Became general manager and partner in the John Wanamaker firm, Philadelphia, Pa. 1893 President, Board of Trustees of Hampton Institute, Hampton, Va. 1896 Started a New York branch of John Wanamaker firm 1897 Became a director of Union Theological Seminary, New York, N.Y. 1900 President, Conference on Education in the South 1902 Member, General Education Board 1907 Retired from business 1913, Aug. 6 Died, Kennebunkport, Maine
