William Wright (1830-1889), orientalist, was born on 17 January 1830. He attended St Andrews University, before studying oriental languages at Halle and Leyden. He was professor of Arabic at University College, London, 1855-1856, and at Trinity College, Dublin, 1856-1861. Wright was employed in the manuscripts department of the British Museum from 1861 to 1870, where he catalogued the collection of Syriac manuscripts. In 1870 he was appointed Sir Thomas Adams's professor of Arabic at Cambridge University, and that year he became a fellow of Queens' College. Wright was also a member of the Old Testament revision committee. He died on 22 May 1889.
