Charles Atwood Kofoid was born in 1865 in Granville, Putnam County, Illinois. He received an A.B. from Oberlin College in 1890, A.M. Harvard, 1892, PhD Harvard, 1894.
He married Prudence Winter, a fellow student at Oberlin, later in the year 1894. Kofoid taught at the University of Michigan for a year (1894-1895) before serving as Superintendant of the Illinois Biological Station, University of Illinois, for five and a half years. In 1900 he went to the University of California at Berkeley as Assistant Professor of Histology and Embrology. By 1910, he had become a professor of Zoology at Berkeley, a position he retained for the rest of his career. He served as Assistant Director of the Scripps Institute from 1900-1924. Kofoid was a leading researcher in protozoology and published many articles on the subject. He retired from his faculty position in 1936, but continued to write and collect books on the subject of biology. Professor Kofoid died on May 30, 1947.
