Biographical notes:
U.S. Senator.
James, a native of Crittenden County, Ky., became a lawyer in 1891, following in his father's footsteps. He involved himself in Kentucky Democratic politics at an early age. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1903-1911. He won election to the U.S. Senate in 1912, and served as permanent chairman of the 1912 and 1916 Democratic National Conventions. He died in 1918, while campaigning for a second term.
